InThe Penguin #11by Tom King and Rafael De Latorre,Batman brings the Penguinup to a rooftop and pummels him after discovering what Oswald Cobblepot is up to. Thanks to the Penguin’s daughter Addison, Batman has discovered that the Penguin is manipulating Bruce to help Oswald re-take Gotham’s criminal underground.
After being beaten up by his associate, the Penguin swears off giving Batman any more information. Batman, in turn, tells the Penguin that their partnership is over.Batman tells Penguin he’s not going to get any more special treatmentas Oswald stares daggers at his former partner.
The Penguin and Batman’s Odd Partnership Is Over
In the earliest days of Batman’s career, Oswald Cobblepot was a bartender in Carmine Falcone’s bar. Tired of having nothing and being a nobody, Cobblepot turned on his employer and began plying the local hero Batman with information to take Falcone down. Cobblepot quickly rose as a major power player among Gotham’s criminal element. But after people grew suspicious of Oswald, he coordinated with the Dark Knight to create a more flamboyant persona to fit in among the Jokers and Riddlers of the city.Though Penguin outwardly fought with Batman, the two were working together the whole time.
Though it took longer than one would think, Batman has discovered that the Penguin has been manipulating him. To be fair, the Penguin has no choice. He’s been made an asset by the United States government as a means to have influence in Gotham. But one could argue that Penguin’s ‘success’ as a villain was only because he had a working relationship with the Caped Crusader. That’s over now and Batman has sworn that Cobblepot is going to be treated like any other law-breaker in Gotham. But the dissolution of this partnershipcould have a devastating effect on Batman’s city.
Batman and Penguin’s Schism Will Only Bring Chaos
Whether Batman likes it or not, Penguin needs to become Gotham’s criminal kingpin again. He’s gathered the greatest killers at his disposal and Cobblepot’s not going to stop until Addison is dead. But Batman never backs down and now that he’s thrown away the kid gloves, the Penguin’s going to find out just how brutal the Dark Knight can really be. Oswald’s already left a trail of blood and dead bodies in his wake, and things are only going to get worse now that his partnership withBatmanis officially over.
