Summary

Since his very first (technically non-canon) introduction inDragon Ball,Brolyhas been a fan-favorite character, as he pushes the limit of how powerful a single Saiyan can be. Broly is a Legendary Super Saiyan, meaning his inherent power level is astronomical compared to Saiyans who have to train extensively their whole lives just to taste even a fraction of Broly’s natural-born strength. And now, in an undeniably cool new fanart,Broly has become even stronger, as he’s ascended to the divine form of Super Saiyan Blue.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) from userKAKERU, the artist shares an image of Broly in his base form, sporting blue hair accompanied by a blue Saiyan tail. Fans are assuredly more used to seeing Broly in his Legendary Super Saiyan form, but this fanart depicts his base form, which stays true to the nature of the Super Saiyan Blue transformation, as it requires one to channel god ki, which does not require a previous Super Saiyan power-up.

DBZ’s Goku, Vegeta, and Broly, all powered-up to Super Saiyan.

Another interesting aspect of this fanart is that it depicts Broly as he was introduced inDragon Ball Z: Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan, which was his non-canonical debut. That’s a bold artistic choice, especially given the fact that Broly was brought into the officialDragon Ballcanon inDragon Ball Super: Broly- though with a noticeably different appearance - where he battled Goku and Vegeta (and Gogeta) in their Super Saiyan Blue forms, meaning that version is no stranger to this particular transformation.

Dragon Ball Super Fans Get the Goku & Vegeta Vs Broly Fight the Manga Was Missing In Epic New Fanart

While Broly is prominently featured in the current Dragon Ball Super manga, the original DBZ version never got such treatment - until this new fanart!

Dragon Ball Could Make Super Saiyan Blue Broly Canon in Super

Broly is Currently Training with Goku & Vegeta inDragon Ball Super

After his canonical introduction inDragon Ball Super: Broly, the Legendary Super Saiyan was invited to train with Goku and Vegeta on Beerus’ world. As of his latest appearance inDragon Ball Superchapter 103 by Akira Toriyama and Toyotarou, Broly is practicing control over his Legendary Super Saiyan form, as opposed to working toward a new transformation. However, afterBroly fought Gohan Beast, it seems he’s further along in that regard than anyone expected, meaning he’ll soon have full control over his Legendary form, and will be able to unlock a new transformation.

When Goku and Vegeta were introduced to divine power by Lord Beerus inDragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, they quickly learned to channel god ki and attain Super Saiyan God, followed almost immediately by Super Saiyan Blue (which is just another name for Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan). Could Broly’s journey take him down similar avenues of power? Given who he’s training with, it seems more than likely, which would effectively make this fanart canon (despite Broly’s non-canon appearance in the fanart).

Dragon Ball’s Broly surging with power.

Dragon Ball Has Every Excuse to Give Broly a SSJBlue Upgrade, But It Shouldn’t

WhileDragon Ball Supercould allow Broly to follow in Goku and Vegeta’s footsteps by unlocking Super Saiyan Blue, it shouldn’t. Super Saiyan Blue uses god ki, and is therefore not a natural Saiyan transformation like the earlier Super Saiyan and Great Ape forms. As a Legendary Super Saiyan, Broly is the perfect embodiment of an all-powerful Saiyan warrior, and his ascension in power shouldn’t deviate from true Saiyan transformations. Goku and Vegeta have all but abandoned Saiyan transformations in lieu of channeling divine power, andDragon Ballwould be unwise to have Broly do the same.

Broly’s progression inDragon Ballshould be more rooted to the primal nature of the Saiyan race, with his Legendary status allowing him to unlock power-ups the likes of which Goku and Vegeta never could - and one fans have never seen. However, despite the potential narrative fallout by havingBrolyreach Super Saiyan Blue, it’s still undeniably cool to see him with the iconicDragon Balltransformation in this epic new fanart.
