What Dune 2’s Massive Success Means For The Franchise
More Arrakis Action Could Be On The Horizon
Villeneuve’s first adaptation of author Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel was a success, but its day-and-date release on Max due to the pandemic certainly stole some of the film’s thunder. Picking up directly after the end of 2021’sDune, the sequel has been a box office sensation, majorly exceeding expectations. The glowing reviews certainly helped, as did the popularity of cast members like Chalamet, Zendaya, Florence Pugh, and Austin Butler.
The success of the most recent film means thatDune: Part Threeis now in the works. The franchise is set to further expand with upcoming Max series,Dune: Prophecy. WhileVilleneuve has been fairly clear that the upcoming third film will be his last journey to Arrakis, there’s no denying that Warner Bros. has a successful franchise on its hands, and it could very well continue to expand.

Dune: Prophecyis expected to release on Max this fall.
This expansion could mean additionalseasons ofDune: Prophecy, but it could also mean additional feature films, perhaps from a different director. There are six books in Herbert’sDuneseries, after all, and the third film will seemingly adapt only the events ofDune: Messiah, the second one. This leaves four that could be adapted down the line. It remains to be seen how the franchise will continue to expand in the years ahead, butDune: Part Two’s success certainly suggests the world of Arrakis could stick around for a long time.
