Many different side quests inFallout 4offer great rewards, but not many give you access to nuclear firepower like those in the"Here There Be Monsters"optional mission. Irradiated beasts and mutated monsters are common sights as you explore the post-war Wasteland. However, you may be surprised by what you find trying to pursue a sighting of a sea monster just off the coast of the Boston Harbor.
Those looking toroleplay inFallout 4as an ambitious cryptid hunter will be slightly disappointed to learn that this quest mostly involves talking to NPC characters. Try tohave a character build specializing in passing speech checksto receive the maximum number of rewards possible from this mission. While you still need to fight several enemies, the best items you’re able to obtain are done through conversations with NPCs.

The Best Part Of Fallout 4’s Next Gen Update Just Got Even Better Thanks To Dedicated Fan
Fallout 4’s latest next-gen update may have broken the game but the addition of the Enclave proved so popular that one fan made it even better.
How To Start The “Here There Be Monsters” Quest
Find Donny Near The Shamrock Taphouse
You can start the"Here There Be Monsters"side quest byspeaking to the NPC Donny Kowalski on the docks behind the Shamrock Taphouse. This character swears that they can see the"eyestalk"of a dangerous sea monster out in the Boston Harbor behind the Taphouse building. They will ask you to personally investigate the issue and see if you can kill the beast before it threatens anyone.
Offering help will start the quest, but it becomes clear quickly that Donny has not seen any sort of monster and instead has mistaken a submarine’s periscope for the appendage of some mutated creature. Unlike other quests that feature some sort ofrandom encounter inFallout 4when a mission starts, you have to activelypursue a new point of interest added to your mapto continue.

Go toward the spot on your map labeled"Yangtze"to discover a submarine hidden under the water. You can swim to this vessel to enter it and meet a Ghoul character named Captain Zao, who will give you the next steps to this quest. This NPC has lived for nearly 200 years and acts as the primary quest giver besides Donny, making him the one that gives you rewards when you finish certain objectives.
How To Repair The Yangtze Ship
Obtain The Right Item For The Job
The Yangtze is unable to move away from the Boston Harbor, so Captain Zao asks you tofind a replacement dampening coil itemto help repair the ship. During this point, you will be able to ask for something in return for this task, even though Zao says there isn’t much treasure on the vessel. Anyone with high enough Charisma can pressure Zao to offer better and better rewards before agreeing to help.
Dampening Coils are considered exclusive quest items inFallout 4and are seen in other missions you may accept throughout your adventure, including the"Out of the Fire"quest.

First, Zao will offer you a small sum of pre-war money, which the Captain is convinced is still worth something despite the game considering it a junk item. Passing the first speech check to pressure Zao makes him raise his offer to include Caps, the normal currency accepted by all vendors in the Wasteland. Managing to pass the next difficult check after this will make Zao reluctantly offer his sword as an additional reward.
Captain Zao’s Sword is a great weapon for those trying to create amelee build inFallout 4for their character. While the weapon has a unique name, it isno different from a Chinese Officer’s Swordwith no legendary effects. You can still upgrade this item with mods, such as the Serrated Blade or Electrified Blade improvements to make it a much stronger tool for dealing with various enemies.

Where To Find Another Dampening Coil
Travel To The Base Of The Forged Faction
According to intelligence gathered by Zao, thebest place to find another dampening coil is Saugus Ironworks, a facility run by the hostile faction known as The Forged. Led by the fanatical maniac Slag, this base can be found south of The Slog, an area around the larger Commonwealth. This place is extremely dangerous to travel to unless you have powerful weapons and gear to handle numerous enemies.
The Forged enemies typically carry Flamers and Molotov Cocktails as weapons, as this group is obsessed with fire. Be prepared to deal with The Forged’s flames by bringing along protective equipment or other items to help against fire damage.

Anyone who has already completed the"Out of the Fire"mission may already be familiar with the Ironworks' layout. The dampening coil islocated in the blast furnace areawhere Slag and his most important officers reside. Unless you have dealt with this faction before, you are in for a big fight against The Forged in this space, no matter what dialogue you choose to try and de-escalate the situation.
Once The Forged have been dealt with, you can see the dampening coil on a blue button towards the back of the room. Returning to Zao with the coil initiates the final step of the quest, so verify to take some time to heal from the previous fight against Slag if you haven’t cleared the Ironworks earlier. Talking to Zao willunlock the lower levels of the Yangtzefor the last stages of thisFallout 4mission.
How To Complete The “Here There Be Monsters” Quest
Fight Your Way To Nuclear Fuel
With a replacement for the Yangtze’s broken dampening coil, all Zao needs is for you toretrieve nuclear fuel from an unfired missile on a lower level of the ship. Unfortunately, the rest of Zao’s crew have turned into Feral Ghouls in this area, making them deadly enemies you have to fight in close quarters. Equipping some strongPower Armor inFallout 4can be a good strategy for dealing with these mutated enemies.
The lower levels of the Yangtze have constant radiation leaking through the area, so remember to have protective gear to reduce the negative effects of radiation or some items that can cure the poisoning too much exposure causes.
Traveling through the Yangtze will reveal a hidden Armory that characters with the right perks can access. As you can see in the above video by YouTube creatorCharlatan Wonder, you need either Nick Valentin as a companion or Master Level Hacking to bypass the terminal in the Armory needed to unlock the weapons and gear inside. Even if you don’t use the items you find, they could still sell for plenty of Caps.
Eventually, you’ll discover the unfired missile and a Glowing One Feral Ghoul guarding it. This first mate of the Yangtze can be defeated to allow you to bring back the nuclear fuel in the warhead from the ship’s weapon. Doing this leads Zao to give you instructions on how to insert the dampening coil and fuel into the ship so that it can become seaworthy once again.
Repairing the Yangtze fully finishes the quest, rewarding you with 4 stacks of pre-war money, 300 Caps, and Captain Zao’s Sword if you pass every speech check from earlier. In addition, you receivethree homing beacons, which can apply a single tactical nuclear strike on a place where they are thrown. Use these items to decimate enemy groups inFallout 4when you complete the"Here There Be Monsters"side quest.
