Warning! This post contains SPOILERS forStar Wars #47
Summary
Star Warshas shown the moment whenLando Calrissianofficially became a Rebel hero and became a true believer in the cause against the Empire. Despite joining the Rebel Alliance in the aftermath ofThe Empire Strikes Back, it took some time for Calrissian to truly commit himself to the fight. Now, Marvel’s canonicalStar Warsseries has revealed the moment when Lando truly became a Rebel, ironically in the wake of a military trial following his confession to selling Rebellion secrets to Jabba the Hutt.
Having no other option to save his dying friend Lobot than to sell out the Rebellion to Jabba, Lando willingly confesses to his crimes. This resulted in a secret trial for Lando in recent issues of Marvel’sStar Wars, one where Calrissian’s lawyer used every trick up her sleeve to endear her client to the tribunal in charge of Lando’s sentencing. Making the case that Lando’s loyalty to the Rebellion was strong, it was confirmed that his loyalty to saving Lobot had simply been stronger. However,Lando himself takes the stand at the end ofStar Wars #47by Charles Soule and Madibek Musabekov.

Confirming that he’s no longer content with self-pity,Lando confirms he truly believes in the Rebel causeand can be trusted to keep fighting the Empire for a free galaxy. However, he also reiterates that he did what he felt was right and is done feeling sorry for the decisions he’s made. To that end,Lando’s final statement before leaving the stand is as quintessentially Lando as possible.
Star Wars Movies In Order: How To Watch Release Order, Chronologically & With The TV Shows
What’s the best way to watch Star Wars? Here’s everything you need to know to watch in release or timeline order, and how to include the TV shows.
Lando’s Closing Statements Are Perfectly On-Brand
But Also Proves His Commitment To The Rebel Cause
Featuring all the charm and confidence he can muster,Lando epically ends the trial on his terms, resigned to whatever the Alliance feels he deserves. That said, Lando also makes it clear that he followed his moral compass in the name of saving his friend. If the Rebellion can’t find a way to live with what he did, Lando is prepared to face whatever the consequences might be, even if that means an execution.
However, it seems as though Lando’s words and those of his lawyer struck a chord with the tribunal, comprised of Admiral Ackbar,Mon Mothma (whom Lando saved from a kidnapping mid-trial), and General Crix Madine (who very much wanted to see Lando thrown out an airlock). As such,Lando’s sentence was much lighter than expected with Calrissian being ordered to pay the Alliance a fine of 250 million credits following the end of the Galactic Civil War. However, it was also made clear that Lando’s debts could be mitigated pending his ongoing service to the Rebellion.

Lando’s Lawyer Also Teased His Return of the Jedi Future
A Major Rebellion General
Lando’s fate post-trial is bound to be very exciting. Not only does it clear Calrissian to continue serving the Rebellion as a hero despite selling them out to save Lobot, but it also freesLando up to achieve his confirmed General status by the time ofReturn of the Jedi. To that end,Lando’s lawyer Salli Georgio even foreshadowed Lando’s futureby telling the tribunal that if running the Alliance were up to her, she’d make Calrissian a general.
“General Calrissian” is something that will indeed come to pass following the future Battle of Taanab which is referenced by Lando in the final original trilogy movie.Apparently, Lando will do something so incredibly heroic in the name of the Alliance that he’ll get massively promoted despite having been tried as a war criminal in these recent issues. At any rate, it’s going to be fascinating to see how Lando proves himself in the eyes of the Rebellion as Marvel’sStar Warscontinues.
