Summary

Larian Studios reassured fans that while its next project may not be a sequel toBaldur’s Gate 3, it should still be enough to satisfy and impress all players. Following the news that the creative team would not be creating a sequel to the acclaimingDungeons & Dragonsgame, many are speculating what could be next for the developer. While there’s still very little information regarding its next title, those involved in the project are already hyping it up as an adventure that should please RPG veterans and newcomers alike.

Speaking toTheGamer, Larian’s Director of Animation Greg Lidstone noted thatthe team’s next project will be its biggest yet, noting that he hopes to dwarf even the most ambitious moments ofBaldur’s Gate 3.This sentiment was shared by Cinematics Animation Producer Leah Caldwell, who stated that she believes “people will really love what we’re cooking up and the stories that we’re going to tell.” Lidstone explained that there’s still a great deal of secrecy when it comes to the new project, noting that he can’t even tell his wife what he’s working on but he’s excited about it.

Baldur’s Gate 4 Doesn’t Need Larian Studios, There’s A Better Choice

Some fans are disappointed that Larian will not work on any future Baldur’s Gate projects, but there is a better option for the series’ future.

What’s Next For Larian Studios?

Perhaps A Return To A Familiar Universe

While neither Caldwell nor Lidstone provided significant insight into Larian’s new game, the former did specify that the developers are excited to “continue on within our kind of own universes.“That in itself has sparked rampant speculation as many now believe the studio is making a long-awaited return to itsDivinityfranchise, a series that’s over two decades old and is beloved amongst the RPG community.Divinity: Original Sin 2was released in September 2017, meaning its been nearly seven years since there’s been anew entry for fans to enjoy.

Caldwell’s statement about Larian continuing with its own universes is certainly not confirmation thatanotherDivinitygameis on the way but it’s a definite possibility. Having raised their reputation and public perception withBaldur’s Gate 3,returning to its own franchise with this bolstered following could be a major movefor the company’s future. Whether or not this transpires remains to be seen but it’s certainly not difficult to imagine that being the case.

Baldur’s Gate 3may largely be a complete experience butLarian Studios does have at least one more substantial update in the works: Official Mod Support. The developer announced that the upcoming September update will introduce the feature into every version of the game, finally allowing console users toexperience the world of mods. More details on the system will be revealed in the coming month as the closed alpha currently takes place.
