The world then transitions into a lava-filled wasteland before the scene cuts to reveal a “Netflix x Minecraft” logo and an animated series coming soon.
To caption the post, Netflix wrote “NETFLIX & CRAFT!” with a pick-ax emoji. The project will be a collaboration between Netflix and Mojang Studios, the game developer behind Minecraft.

Though the Netflix announcement is significant in revealing the show’s creation, the post did very little by way of explaining anything about the television series. Because of the centrality of world creation toMinecraft’s gameplay, an animated TV show could go off in a number of different directions. There are main characters which the series can reference, such as Steve or the Endermen, but there is ample opportunity to go off in various directions with the television series. The animated format is particularly freeing, as it allows for the fantastical creation of worlds.
The development of this Netflix show comes at an interesting time, as it will have to stand up against the live-actionMinecraftadaptation arriving from Warner Bros. Pictures. Said adaptation has a lot going for it, and thus will be hard to compete against. This includes asuperstarMinecraftcast, led by Jason Momoa and also featuring a stacked crew of Jack Black,Wednesday’s Emma Myers, Jennifer Coolidge, Jemaine Clement, Kate McKinnon, and recent Oscar nominee Danielle Brooks. It is also directed by Jared Hess, who is a hugely talented director.
