Seven years in and things ain’t so novice anymore – ahead of its release next week,The Rookie Season 7Episode 12 promo is taking on a grisly horror franchise in time for April Fools’ Day.

The creators of The Rookie think of it as the cop version of Grey’s Anatomy, so rest assured it isn’t going anywhere soon. ATV showthat’s tackling years’ worth of episodes is going to cross paths with some familiar IPs, as is now the case in Season 7.

If you’re particularly squeamish or jumpy, next week’s episode is probably one you should skip. Sure, John and Celina have just been in a hostage situation, but next week things take an even darker turn.

How do we know this? An episode synopsis hasn’t been widely released yet, but The Rookie Season 7 Episode 12 promo pays homage to one ofhorror‘s most toe-curling franchises.

As you can see from the below promo, The Rookie Season 7 Episode 12, fittingly titled ‘April Fools’ Day,’ is taking on its own version ofThe Purgemovies.

If you look hard enough, you can find a synopsis that gives us a sliver of more detail. “An April Fools’ prank on LAPD’s social media leads to citywide chaos; John’s T.O. skills are tested; Wesley is assigned a challenging case; Tim and Lucy play a joke on the team,” it reads.

That ‘citywide chaos’ is an apparent purge, with officers spotting an alarming social media callout from someone pretending to be the LAPD. “City of Los Angeles: For the next 3 hours, ALL CRIME IS LEGAL. Go nuts, and don’t call us,” the post reads.

If you’ve never seen The Purge before… well, you’re in for an unwelcome surprise. The overall concept is pretty simple: for a set period of time (usually until sunrise), crime is legal, and everyone becomes a potential murder victim. Or serial killer, depending on your persuasion.

At the moment, it’s too early to say which movies the new Rookie episode will take inspiration from, but logic tells us we can assume the first, second, and third films are the most relevant.
